Football Clubs in Wellington
If you are looking to play for one of the many football clubs in Wellington, you’ll find heaps of useful information in this post.
Our city has one of the strongest football cultures in New Zealand: It hosts the Wellington Phoenix – the only professional team in the country, which plays in the Australian A-League – and is represented in the ASB Premiership by Team Wellington and in the ASB National Women’s League by the Capital Football team. There are also many local football clubs in Wellington that participate in different national and regional tournaments, generating high quality players for the All Whites, the Football Ferns and other National Teams.
Browsing the different websites of the football clubs in Wellington you will notice that each of them has many teams, so I am sure you will find one that suits your needs, there are: First Teams, Social Teams, Female Teams, Master, U21 and Junior Teams.
ADULTS: If you are an adult who just wants to play some footy on the weekends, you will find the teams that play the Capital Football Tournament most suited to your need. This competition has several divisions: for male players from Division 1 to Division 18 and for Female Players from Division 1 to Division 3. These divisions are organized based on each team’s performance. The teams in the first divisions normally train a couple of times a week, the rest of them just meet on the game day (and some players arrive just in time for the beers after the game)! If you love football but you find these competition too physically demanding, you can try joining a team from the Wellington Masters Tournament, there are: Male Young Masters (35+) and Senior Masters (45+) teams and Female Masters Teams (28+).
YOUNGSTERS: Most of the clubs have U21 and U17 teams, as well as Junior Teams for both male and female players. Have fun, make friends and who knows, you may turn out to be a football star like Messi!
If the outdoor football is not enough for you (or the weather conditions are far too much), you may want to look into Futsal and Indoor Soccer teams.
The football clubs in Wellington have been organised by region and suburb below. Please let me know if you find any outdated information and I will be more than happy to keep on top of it.
